Walter J. Pendergast, age 69, of Maynard, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 3, 2023 after a short battle with cancer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Walter was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on October 22, 1954, son of the late Gerald Douglas and Mary C. (Hartford) Pendergast. He was raised and educated in Maynard graduating from Maynard High School in 1974. Walter began his lawn care business while in high school at the age of 15! Walter took great pride in maintaining the lawn at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home often stating, “It will look like a billiard table”. Walter maintained the lawn for more than fifty years. Supplementing his lawn care business was Walter’s employment at Data Terminal Systems, Durand Motors, Christmas Motors, and The Christmas Tree Shop. He eventually retired from The Maynard School System where he worked as a custodian in 2021.
Walter enjoyed attending car shows throughout New England. He was an avid NASCAR enthusiast, Patriots and Red Sox fan. Walter was well known for his Sunday morning drives and his mental ability to catalog and remember the highways and byways of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Walter looked forward to vacations with family in North Conway, New Hampshire, where he took great peace in the beauty that surrounded him there.
Walter is survived by his sister-in-law Kathy Pendergast of Maynard, MA; his niece, Kate Pendergast of Maynard, MA; his nephew, Jon Pendergast of Maynard, MA; and his cousins Darlene Scorzelli, Debra Hartford, Howard Hartford and Crosby Hallett. Walter was predeceased by his brother Douglas G. Pendergast.
Walter will live on in the hearts of those he has left behind.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Walter on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home, 42 Concord Street, Maynard.
