Walter R. Dolan

Walter R. Dolan, age 87, of Maynard, MA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 23, 2026. He was the loving husband of Rosalie G. (Lane) Dolan.

Walter was born in Stamford, Connecticut, on January 26, 1939, son of the late Walter R. and Margaret D. (Endrichs) Dolan. He was raised and educated in Stamford, graduating from Stamford High School with the class of 1956. He continued his education at Boston University, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatrical Consulting in 1961.

Walter began his career as a Technical Theater Professional at the Ogunquit Playhouse and North Shore Music Theatre. He taught several courses at Brandeis University for 11 years, including Set Design, Drafting, and Lighting Design as well as other theater arts subjects. Walter was the Technical Director / Stage Manager for the Boston Opera House and the J. Everett Collins Center for the Performing Arts. He was especially proud to work as a consultant with Boston Ballet, where he particularly enjoyed designing and engineering the sets for The Nutcracker and Romeo & Juliet. Ballet companies around the world rented the Romeo & Juliet set for their own performances, and he traveled with it to Russia, Florence, Puerto Rico, and several locations across the United States. As recently as 2022, he traveled to Phoenix when Ballet Arizona used “his” Romeo & Juliet set.

Walter moved to Maynard in 1969 and quickly found opportunities to serve in the community. This included volunteering on the Maynard Centennial Committee in 1971 and helping design the Official Maynard Town Seal, including the suggestion for the time shown on the Maynard Town Clock to be 12:10 as a nod to the time the “noon” fire whistle was actually sounded daily.

Walter loved being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He found many ways to serve within the congregations he belonged to, including the Weston and Marlborough wards of the Boston Stake. He felt the importance of each opportunity, whether helping to put on road show theater productions, running a beekeeping project, working with the Young Single Adults (and hosting Sunday dinners for more than 20 years), or teaching Sunday School classes. He attended church every Sunday and was always keen to notice when someone was new or visiting. Even now, people tell of how Walter was the first to greet them as they walked through the church doors, and how he often invited them over to the Dolan home for Sunday dinner. Following his theater career, Walter worked in the Boston Massachusetts LDS Temple as a member of the security staff and served for 20 years as a volunteer ordinance worker.

While his career and years of volunteer service were accomplishments he valued deeply, nothing was more important to Walter than his family. He was the devoted father of two daughters from his first marriage, gained two more children when he married Rosalie on February 20, 1976, and together they welcomed four children of their own. Whether by birth or by choice, each of his children held a special place in his heart. He looked forward to annual cross-country camping trips with his family, and loved celebrating Christmas with caroling and delivering homemade pumpkin bread to friends and family. In later years, out-of-state visits to his children would begin with a request to “make a list of what needs to be repaired,” and he would get right to work when he arrived. When he could no longer travel, visits in person or phone calls with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a highlight and brought him great joy.

Walter is survived by his wife, Rosalie G. Dolan of Maynard, MA; his children, Melissa Aalders (Mike), Jeffrey Berke, Meg Job (Jack), Karen Udall (Tom), Sarah Little (Todd), Ben Dolan (Rebecca), Michael Dolan (Andrea), and Rachel Dolan; his 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Walter was predeceased by his sisters, Betty Carroll and Dorothy Doyle.
