Romeo (Al) Nelson, 89, a resident of Maynard, MA for 59 years, died unexpectedly Saturday, October 5, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Katherine M. Nelson for 68 years.
He was born and raised in Claremont, NH, the son of the late Arabella and Henry Nelson, also the brother of the late Henry and Roger Nelson. He is survived by his wife Katherine and his 4 sons, Wayne and wife Lynn, Mark and wife Linda, Steve and Michael Nelson, along with 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Romeo joined the Air Force in 1955, where he worked in computer programming until 1960, when he was discharged. After the Air Force they moved to Waltham, MA where he was hired by Raytheon as a computer programmer in the payroll department, where he worked for 35 years.
During their younger years, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson liked to bowl and square dance and were members of the Acton Square Wheelers. Romeo was also an avid clock collector and builder. For many years he liked to tend to his vegetable garden and also plant a variety of vibrant flowers.
During his retirement he enjoyed many activities which included rebuilding antique gas engines along with building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes. He was a 35+ year member of the Crowe Island Radio-Control Flying Club. He was also a member of the former Maynard Area Auto Club and enjoyed maintaining and riding in his classic 65 mustang fastback.
Funeral services were held on October 25, 2024, in St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Maynard.
