Peter E. Popieniuck, age 76, of Lunenburg, formerly of Maynard, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. He was the devoted husband of the late Molly Malone-Popieniuck, whom he described as the love of his life.
Born on July 16, 1948, in Concord, Massachusetts, Peter was the beloved son of the late Alexander and Marjorie I. (Wilkins) Popieniuck. He grew up in Maynard, where he formed lifelong friendships and graduated from Maynard High School in 1966. Peter was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by his classmates, a prediction he fulfilled in both his personal and professional life.
Peter dedicated much of his career as a Technical Editor at the Digital Equipment Company and EMC Corporation, retiring in 2010. In his retirement, he continued his passion for writing by doing freelance technical work. He also achieved a lifelong dream of becoming an author, publishing his own book, "My Naked Safari: Adventures of an Amateur Sportsman," in 2015.
Beyond his professional life, Peter was a man of many passions. He found joy in the great outdoors, whether he was fishing, hunting or exploring, and often embarked on adventures that took him around the globe. His love for nature was also evident in his own backyard, where he took great pride in tending to his vegetable garden, as his grandfather and father had done before him.
An avid reader, Peter found solace and inspiration in books, with "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau being a particular favorite. He also enjoyed writing, cooking, and sharing these joys with family and friends. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Peter had a unique ability to bring laughter to any situation, brightening the days of everyone around him.
Peter had a deep sense of community and spent much of his time at the Eagle House Senior Center in Lunenburg. His commitment to helping others was further shown in his dedication as a blood donor, something he took great pride in. He also gave back to his community by volunteering with the Boy Scouts, troop 30 and 130 of Maynard, to guide young people and instill in them a love of the outdoors and service to others. Peter's life was also marked by his remarkable physical achievements, having run the Boston Marathon six times with four completions, a testament to his perseverance and love of challenges.
Peter's memory will live on in the hearts of his children, Jason M. Popieniuck and his wife Shelly Greenblat of Venice, CA; Alexander P. Popieniuck of Townsend, MA; Matthew B. Popieniuck and his wife Karissa of Douglas, MA; and Lara E. White and her husband Michael W. of Lunenburg, MA. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Oliver, Vivienne, Harrison, Liam, Mia, Nora, and Everest, who brought him endless joy. Peter also leaves behind his loving siblings, Anthony A. Popieniuck and his wife Lynne Michaud of Bryant Pond, ME; Iris L. Belmore and her husband K.B. Belmore of Maynard, MA; and Elizabeth A. Moore and her husband Wendell D. of Groton, MA, along with his girlfriend Sandra Ricci of Leominster, MA; Kathleen Larkin of Townsend, MA, the mother of his children; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who were like family to him.
