Martha Anne Whittemore

Martha Anne Whittemore, age 90, of Maynard, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 10, 2024. 

Martha was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on July 19, 1934, daughter of the late Harold B. and Marian (Frink) Whittemore. She was a graduate of Stoneleigh Prospect School and one of the first female graduates of Springfield College, class of 1957, with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Physical Education 

Martha spent 53 years coaching, teaching, substituting, and volunteering in the Maynard School system. During her tenure at Maynard, Coach Whittemore never had a losing season and had many undefeated teams. She helped instill the importance of education and hard work in the girls she coached. Ms. Whittemore taught Physical Education to grades K through 12. She coached girls’ basketball, field hockey and softball at Maynard High School, retiring in 1989. 

Martha enjoyed researching the Whittemore family tree and photography. She relished taking photos of family members at family gatherings. 

Martha is survived by her brother, Harold B. Whittemore, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, her step-brother David O. Whittemore of Bedford, MA, and her step-sister, Susan A. Doerflinger, of Naples, FL, her niece, Marion Janette Whittemore of Jacksonville, FL, nephews, Harold B. Whittemore III of Townsend, MA, Blair Whittemore of Nuremburg, Germany and John D. Whittemore of Merrimac, MA. Also, cousins, Sharon F. Whittemore of Framingham, MA and John Robert Whittemore of Edisto Island, SC. Nieces, Betsy Whittemore and Holly Whittemore. 

Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Martha on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home, 42 Concord Street, Maynard. Her Funeral Service will be celebrated at the conclusion of the visitation at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
