Katherine M. Nelson, 90, a resident of Maynard, MA for 59 years, died with family by her side, on Tuesday, December 24th, 2024. She was the beloved wife of Romeo A. Nelson for 68 years, until his passing in October 2024.
She was born and raised in Windsor, VT the daughter of the late Frank and Myrtle Miner. Katherine was the last surviving member of her 8 siblings. She is survived by 4 sons, Wayne and wife Lynn, Mark and wife Linda, Steve and Michael Nelson, along with 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Katherine and her husband Romeo were married on September 3rd, 1956, in New Hampshire. Shortly thereafter Romeo joined the Air Force, and they headed to Homestead, FL for the next 6 years. While in Florida, Katherine worked in a medical office, while the couple also expanded their family, having their first two sons.
After leaving Florida in 1962 they moved to Waltham, MA, where Romeo accepted a job with Raytheon, a Defense Company. There they expanded their family again, having two more sons. After 3 years in Waltham, they bought their home In Maynard, MA where they lived for 59 years.
Katherine was a great mom, but also held many jobs over her lifetime. She was a nanny for several years for two young children. She also held other jobs through the years, but working at Data Terminal Systems in Maynard was one of her favorite jobs. During her tenure there she met many great lifetime friends and toured many National Parks during the annual companywide summer trips.
During their younger years, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson liked to bowl and square dance and were members of the Acton Square Wheelers for a number of years. They also enjoyed attending local fall fairs and festivals in the area and Kay took great pleasure in attending the Maynard Community Band concerts during the summer months.
Her husband, Romeo, passed away on October 5th after 68 years of marriage, and we feel as though she didn’t want to spend Christmas without him. So, two months later (on Christmas Eve) Kay went to heaven to spend Christmas with her beloved husband…….together again!
Funeral services will be held at a later date this summer in St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Maynard.
