Irene (Barker) Aromaa

Irene (Barker) Aromaa, age 94, of Rumford, ME, formerly of Maynard, on Thursday January 12, 2017.

Daughter of the late James and Eveline (Wilber) Barker. Beloved wife of the late Ruben Aromaa.
Loving mother of Karl and wife Rita Aromaa of Hanover, ME; Glynis Hamel of Acton; and James
Aromaa of Ashby. Also survived by grandchildren Susan Aromaa and Katherine Aromaa, both of
Portland, OR; Christopher Hamel of Shrewsbury; and Jonathan Hamel of Cambridge; and
great-grandson Evan Hamel.

Irene was born in Stockport, Cheshire, England, on September 6, 1922. In 1947, at age 24, Irene left
everyone and everything she knew and made the 10-hour flight across the Atlantic to wed the
handsome American G.I. she had met in wartime England. They shared 45 happy years of marriage
before his passing in 1992. Irene never forgot her roots, maintaining her English citizenship
throughout her life, becoming a member of the TransAtlantic Brides Association, and exchanging
letters with her sisters every week for more than 50 years.Irene loved her family, pets, poetry, Larry Bird, and the Boston Globe.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
