Douglas L. Miller, age 78, of Maynard, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 23, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Doug was born in Concord, Massachusetts on April 10, 1948, to the late David A. and Ruth E. (Kaattari) Miller.
Doug was raised and educated in Maynard, graduating from Maynard High School, class of 1966. After graduation, he went to Framingham State University (formerly Framingham State College) to pursue a degree in education. Doug received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history, class of 1970. He began his career in the 1970’s teaching social studies at the Fowler Junior High in Maynard. In 1991, Doug continued teaching social studies at the Maynard High School until his retirement in June of 1999.
Doug was an avid car enthusiast. His passion started in the 1960’s when he worked for his father at Miller’s Sunoco gas and service station. Along with oil changes and mechanical repairs, they began specializing in the mechanics of muscle cars. Doug began to know a lot of his customers on a first-name basis. A lot of them brought their muscle cars in for regular maintenance and repairs and also to fill up with the Sunoco high-octane fuel.
Over the years, Doug would often be seen reading car magazines and manuals for automotive diagnostics. He was often fascinated by a car that was rare, its history, and its specifications. From turning wrenches at a young age, Doug went on to become an encyclopedia in automotive history. His knowledge was matched only by his enthusiasm to share it with others. Doug’s prized possession was his 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge convertible, which reflected his passion and nostalgia from that era.
After retirement, Doug spent a lot of time on his boat “Satisfaction” on Lake Winnipesaukee. He was a member of the Meredith Yacht Club in Meredith, NH, for many years.
Doug is survived by his close friend, Buddy, and wife, Sue Clair, of Lancaster, SC (formerly of Maynard, MA); Kenny Clair, of Lunenberg, MA; Kim Clair Smoyer, of New Tripoli, PA; Bob Allenberg, of Sudbury, MA; and Jay Clair, of Nashua, NH. Douglas was predeceased by his brother, Bruce Miller. He was a good friend to many and will be sorely missed.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Douglas on Monday, June 1, 2026, from 4:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home, 42 Concord Street, Maynard. Funeral Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home 42 Concord Street, Maynard. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
