Brita I. (Forsstrom) Kurkaa, age, 87 of Maynard, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, February 26, 2026. She was the wife of the late Keijo Kurkaa.
Born in Helsinki, Finland, on September 10, 1938, Brita was the daughter of the late Tor Vidar Forsstrom and Greta I. (Westerlund) Sandstrom. Brita was raised in Sibbo, Finland and graduated from secondary school in Helsinki in 1959. Keijo and Brita married on November 23, 1968, and settled in Maynard to raise a family together.
Brita worked as a personal assistant at the Digital Equipment Corporation for many years and after retiring enjoyed working at Idylwilde Farms in Acton.
Brita enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, gardening, and taking walks. She was a social lady, loved to laugh, had a perfect smile and a generous heart. She cherished time spent at the camp on Lake Watatic with family and friends as well as trips back to Finland to see her family, trips to France to visit Minna and her family.
Brita is survived by her daughters, Minna E. Kurkaa Riggi and husband Cyril Riggi of Rognes, France; Tania M. Kurkaa of Maynard, MA; her brother Goran Forsstrom of Sweden; her sister, Rita Sandstrom of Finland; her grandchildren, Anton Riggi, Elias Riggi, Emmett Kurkaa Walker and Annika Kurkaa Walker.
The family is insistent on no gifts but would love to hear your memories and stories about Brita. Please join us for a visitation at Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Following the visitation please join the family for coffee and refreshments at their home at 5 Country Lane.
