Abraham Lukose Vazhayil (Kunjumon) – 92
March 28, 1933 – January 18, 2026
Abraham Lukose Vazhayil, lovingly known as Kunjumon/Kunjumonachayan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 6:10 PM at Milford Regional Hospital, surrounded by his children and relatives. He was 92 years old. His was truly a blessed life - rich in faith, service, humility, and love.
Born on March 28, 1933, in Veliyanadu, Changanacherry, Kerala, India, Abraham Lukose was the second oldest of fourteen children born to T. Abraham and Chachykutty Vazhayil. He was a lifelong member of St. Stephen’s Knanaya Church in Veliyanadu, and after immigrating to the United States, he became a devoted member of St. Stephen’s Knanaya Church in Maynard, Massachusetts.
A bright and disciplined student, Abraham Lukose completed his schooling at SB High School, Changanacherry, and his Intermediate studies at SB College, Changanacherry. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Philomena’s College, Mysore (1952–1954), and went on to complete his MA and LLB degrees at Aligarh Muslim University (1957–1959). During his time at Aligarh, he distinguished himself as the Captain of the Aligarh Muslim University Riding Club, reflecting his leadership, confidence, and versatility.
Although trained in law, he practiced only briefly before returning home to Veliyanadu to assist his parents in managing the family’s agricultural enterprises. This decision reflected his deep sense of duty and filial devotion.
In 1961, Abraham Lukose joined AV George & Co., later moving to TR & T Company, where he managed the Nenmenni Rubber Estate with dedication and integrity. He later served as Superintendent at AV George & Co., Nenmenni Estate, and subsequently at the Mundakkayam Eldorado Estate. He was widely respected for his fairness, discipline, and compassionate leadership.
In June 1987, he migrated to the United States and settled in Massachusetts. There, he owned and operated the Marlboro Shell Car Wash and Convenience Store for several years before retiring, earning the trust and goodwill of customers and the community through his honesty and work ethic.
Abraham Lukose was deeply committed to the Knanaya Samudayam and the Syriac Orthodox Church. In 1966, he was elected Secretary of the Knanaya Young Men’s Association, serving faithfully for three years. In 1974, during a particularly turbulent period in the history of the community, he was elected Secretary of the Malankara Suriyani Knanaya Samudayam for 3 consecutive terms, a position he held until 1980.
During these challenging years, he became a trusted confidant and senior advisor to His Eminence Abraham Mor Clemis Metropolitan, offering wise counsel, calm leadership, and unwavering loyalty to the Church and its traditions. In recognition of his outstanding contributions in bringing peace to the community, His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I presented him with the Patriarchal Peace Medal.
Abraham Lukose was married to Vimala, who hails from the Amburan family of Kottayam. Together they built a home grounded in faith, discipline, and love. He was blessed with five children:
• Chachu, married to Biju Manimalethu
• Babu, married to his late wife Janet Edavazhickal
• Sunil, married to Prima Kallamparampil
• Meru, married to Edgar
• Joppu, married to Tinu Vathakat
He leaves behind nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, each a continuation of his enduring legacy.
Among the younger generation, he was affectionately known as “Muttai Appachen” or “Chocolate Appachen.” True to these names, he delighted in spoiling children with chocolates and treats, bringing smiles wherever he went. Behind his dignified and composed demeanor was a gentle, playful heart, and the joy he brought to children will be remembered fondly for generations.
